What is an MRI Scan?
What happens during my exam?
Prior to the exam you will be asked to fill out an MRI screening form to ensure you are safe to be in the MRI. During an MRI exam, the patient is placed on a table that advances into the gantry. During the exam, the technologist will leave the MRI room and observe from the MRI control room. You will be able to communicate with the technologist throughout the entire scan. During the MRI, you will hear loud noises that are generated within the MRI unit while images are being produced. Earplugs will be provided.
What is MRI with contrast?
In some cases, a physician may decide to use a contrast agent to help enhance the image quality of the MRI scan. The contrast agent improves the clarity of the images.
Are there risks associated with MRI?
An MRI scan does not use X-Ray, but instead, a strong magnet to obtain images.. There are no known side effects of an MRI scan. The benefits of an MRI scan relate to its precise accuracy in detecting structural abnormalities of the body.
Patients who have metal in their body must notify an MRI technician prior to the examination.
